The nine clans of Bakor Nation in Cross River State came together on September 15, 2026, for the annual New Yam Festival, the traditional thanksgiving celebration that marks the end of the harvest season. With the festivities now behind them, attention is turning to what comes next for agriculture in the region
Agro Trade Hub, a joint venture bringing together Verneldos Global Services Ltd, Ntonarch Acumen Network, Gideon’s Enterprise, and other partners, has congratulated Bakor Nation on its contribution to national food security and announced that registration is now open for farmers across all nine clans. The initiative is designed to pair the region’s long agricultural heritage with modern tools, inputs, and market access.
Why Modernisation Matters
Celebrated each year across the Ikom and Ogoja local government areas under the leadership of traditional rulers from all nine clans, the New Yam Festival stands as one of the clearest expressions of Bakor Nation’s farming identity. Agro Trade Hub organisers say the region’s fertile soil already produces strong yields through traditional farming methods, but has much more to gain from targeted investment.
Bassey Nton Nton, a Bakor advocate who spoke in an interview around the festival, argued that the region’s limitation isn’t agricultural potential but a shortage of investment and infrastructure. Agro Trade Hub points to three risks of leaving this unaddressed: soil depletion in the absence of modern management, post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage, and weaker bargaining power for farmers without organised access to markets. The organisation says all three can be tackled through structured support.
