Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has approved the release of popular native doctor, Chigozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko, from the Amawbia Correctional Centre.

Nwangwu, who had been serving a six-month jail sentence, was released on Friday when Governor Soludo visited the correctional facility and personally signed the release order at about 5:32 p.m.

Akwa Okuko had earlier pleaded guilty to charges relating to misleading members of the public through claims associated with traditional practices and purported wealth-making miracles.

Before his conviction, he had reportedly spent more than a year in the custody of the Agunechemba Security Squad. The period spent in custody before conviction was said to have contributed to the reduction of his eventual sentence.

The native doctor had also applied for release about three months ago, although he had not completed his sentence at the time.

Speaking after the release, the Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Youth, Dr. Omenugha, commended the governor for the gesture, saying it reflected the administration’s efforts to discourage the pursuit of quick wealth among young people.

Despite his release, Akwa Okuko is expected to complete part of his sentence through community service. He will also serve as a youth ambassador, where he is expected to mentor younger people and discourage practices associated with the promotion of quick wealth.

He is further expected to publicly renounce claims or advertisements he previously made in his capacity as a native doctor.

Meanwhile, other persons convicted in connection with similar offences, including Eke Hit and Onyeze Jesus, remain at the correctional centre serving their respective sentences.
