The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, Nwachukwu Chidubem Blessing, over an alleged attempt to stage her own kidnap and obtain ₦3 million from her family.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, following intelligence gathered during an investigation into a reported kidnapping incident.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the woman was allegedly abducted along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on August 29, 2026.
Ikenga said the victim’s family reportedly paid ₦3 million as ransom, but the alleged kidnappers failed to release her, prompting the police to intensify their investigation.
He said the investigation eventually led operatives to a room in Asaba, Delta State, where the woman was found and rescued on the afternoon of September 18, 2026.
“Following sustained intelligence gathering and investigative efforts, police operatives, in the afternoon of 18th September 2026, traced and located the alleged victim in a room in Asaba, Delta State, where she was recovered,” Ikenga said.
Preliminary investigation, according to the police, indicated that Blessing allegedly conspired with a female associate identified as Onyinye, whose full identity is yet to be established, as well as a male accomplice who is currently at large.
The police alleged that the group staged the abduction as part of a plan to obtain money from the woman’s family.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with information that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and lead to the arrest of her alleged accomplices.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified and that anyone found culpable be brought before the law.
The command also warned members of the public, particularly youths, against engaging in self-kidnap and other fraudulent activities, stressing that such acts constitute criminal offences punishable under the law.
The police said further information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
