The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended the Director-General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD), Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, for championing women’s leadership in the media and promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The council, in a birthday message signed by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, praised Benjamins-Laniyi’s leadership, describing her as an advocate of gender equality whose efforts have helped create opportunities for women to assume leadership positions and influence public discourse.

Ike said the MBNCWD director-general had demonstrated a commitment to advancing women’s participation in leadership through mentorship, advocacy and initiatives aimed at strengthening their representation across sectors.

“As a tireless advocate for women’s advancement, she has actively championed pathways that place women in media leadership roles, mentoring and opening doors so that more women can shape public discourse and policy,” she said.

The NUJ FCT chairman also commended Benjamins-Laniyi’s advocacy for persons with disabilities, noting that her efforts had drawn greater institutional attention to accessibility, representation and inclusive development.

She said the director-general’s leadership extended beyond policy initiatives, citing her integrity, collaborative approach and engagement with stakeholders across different sectors as qualities that had strengthened her work at the centre.

According to Ike, Benjamins-Laniyi has continued to consolidate the MBNCWD’s role in promoting gender-responsive leadership, capacity development and advocacy for women’s empowerment.

The council particularly acknowledged her commitment to the professional development of women journalists, saying her efforts to expand opportunities for women in media leadership had inspired a new generation of female practitioners.

It urged sustained collaboration among stakeholders to advance gender equality, strengthen women’s representation in decision-making and promote the empowerment of all Nigerians.

“As we celebrate this special day, we convey our heartfelt wishes for good health, renewed strength and continued success,” Ike said.

“We pledge our continued collaboration as she advances gender equality, women’s leadership in media and empowerment for all Nigerians.”

The NUJ FCT Council reaffirmed its appreciation for Benjamins-Laniyi’s advocacy, expressing confidence that continued engagement between institutions and media stakeholders would help create more opportunities for women and promote inclusive representation.
