The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 121 motorists for committing 214 traffic offences during its ongoing “Operation Total Compliance” enforcement exercise across Anambra State.
The operation, which is being conducted simultaneously in the FRSC’s 12 zonal commands nationwide, is aimed at promoting road safety, enforcing traffic regulations, and reducing accidents caused by reckless driving.
Speaking during the exercise, the Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, represented by the Officer in Charge of Motor Vehicle Administration, Deputy Corps Commander (DCC) Gloria Ezeugwu, said the initiative combines enforcement, public enlightenment, and mobile court prosecutions to ensure greater compliance with road traffic laws.
According to her, the offences recorded during the exercise include 27 cases of overloading, 34 violations involving speed limiting devices, 10 cases of driving without valid licences, and four attempts by motorists to bribe FRSC officials. The Corps also arrested two drivers each for dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, among other offences.
Asekhauno warned against the practice of transporting passengers together with animals or goods, describing it as a dangerous habit that could lead to serious accidents.
She also expressed concern over motorists who either fail to install speed limiting devices or deliberately disable them to exceed safe speed limits, stressing that such actions endanger both drivers and other road users.
The Sector Commander urged motorists to ensure they possess valid driver’s licences, obey speed regulations, avoid alcohol or drug use before driving, and comply with all traffic rules.
She noted that the enforcement campaign serves as preparation for the busy ember months, when road traffic usually increases, adding that safer roads can only be achieved through the collective efforts of road users and the FRSC.
“Our objective is to encourage compliance with traffic regulations while protecting lives on our highways. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and every driver and passenger has a role to play,” she said.
