By Sunny A. David, Onitsha
Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Victor Umeh, has called for urgent Federal Government intervention following severe flooding that has affected parts of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Umeh made the call during a visit to flood-ravaged communities in Ogidi, where he inspected some of the worst-hit areas and sympathised with residents whose homes and livelihoods have been affected by the disaster.
The senator expressed concern over the hardship caused by the recurring flooding and assured residents that their plight would be brought to the attention of the Federal Government.
He said that upon the resumption of the National Assembly, he would sponsor a motion seeking urgent federal action to address the flooding and promote measures capable of providing a lasting solution to the problem.
Umeh also sympathised with the traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom, HRM Igwe Pharm. Alex Uzor Onyido, Ezechuamagha I, who was among those personally affected by the flood.
The President-General of Ogidi, Mr. Chijioke Ewesiobi, and the President-General of Ogidi Youth, Hon. Chris Obi Okafor, appealed to both the Federal and Anambra State Governments to urgently intervene.
They called for immediate attention to drainage and flood-control infrastructure, rehabilitation of affected areas and provision of relief materials to families displaced or impacted by the flooding.
The senator’s visit has renewed calls for stronger collaboration between the Federal and state governments to tackle the perennial flooding in Ogidi, provide immediate assistance to affected residents and develop sustainable measures to prevent future occurrence.
