The Mayor-elect of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Peter Ikechukwu Mofunanya, has expressed gratitude to residents of the council area for electing him under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Mofunanya, who spoke with journalists at the Onitsha South Local Government Secretariat following the local government election, described his victory as a collective success for the people of the area.
He commended residents for their participation in the election and described the exercise as peaceful, orderly and well organised, noting that there was an impressive turnout of voters across the council area.
According to him, electoral materials arrived early and voting commenced without major challenges.
“The atmosphere was calm, people came out to vote and the entire process went smoothly. Election materials arrived as early as 7:55am and the exercise was orderly,” he said.
The Mayor-elect said he was confident of emerging victorious because of the popularity of APGA and the achievements of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration in Anambra State.
He pledged to sustain and build on the developmental initiatives of the state government while bringing improved governance and service delivery to the people of Onitsha South.
“I was confident of victory because I contested on the platform of a popular party as a popular candidate. Governor Chukwuma Soludo has performed remarkably well, and I will work to replicate his developmental achievements in Onitsha South,” Mofunanya stated.
He noted that Onitsha South had benefited from several projects under the current administration, including the construction and commissioning of about 15 roads in the area.
Mofunanya also highlighted the establishment of a General Hospital in the council, saying many women had benefited from the state’s free antenatal healthcare programme, including free caesarean section services.
According to him, the projects and interventions had further strengthened the relationship between the people of Onitsha South and the APGA-led government in Anambra State.
The Mayor-elect assured residents that his administration would prioritise continuity while introducing new initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the people.
“Transformation will be my watchword,” he declared.
On youth development, Mofunanya said his administration would give special attention to unemployed young people in the council area.
He disclosed that he had already begun engaging youths and promised to support their participation in the Anambra State Government’s “1 Youth, 2 Skills” empowerment initiative.
Mofunanya further assured the people of purposeful, inclusive and people-oriented leadership, while praising Governor Soludo for what he described as his transformational programmes across the state.
Also speaking, the outgoing Secretary of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Mr. Paul Osuschara, who spoke on behalf of the immediate past Mayor, Hon. Emeka Orji, described the election as peaceful, credible and well conducted.
Osuschara commended the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) for the timely deployment of election materials and praised security agencies for maintaining peace and order throughout the exercise.
He also appreciated members of the media for their role in monitoring and reporting the election.
