The Managing Director of the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, Abubakar Malam, has said the recent political behaviour of opposition parties at state and national levels demonstrates talks from a position of weakness and uncertainty ahead of next year’s general elections.
Malam, who was speaking to journalists in Birnin Kebbi, observed that members of the opposition had resorted to character assassination of the President, Governors and political office holders instead of issue-based electioneering.
He noted that all the challenges the country is going through were inherited, and that the APC-led administration at both federal and state levels would not rest on its oars until things return to normalcy for the betterment of all citizens.
The Managing Director expressed concern over baseless claims of financial misappropriation, poor governance, workers’ suffering and a carefree attitude to security challenges in Kebbi, noting that justice had not been done to the efforts of Governor Nasir Idris.
He said the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway being constructed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would open up business, farming and socio-economic activities beneficial to communities in both Sokoto and Kebbi States.
Malam, who also holds the traditional title of Shatiman Gwandu, disclosed that his organisation had been managing water resources in the basin effectively by encouraging farmers to engage in dry-season farming to augment wet-season harvests.
He urged farmers along the River Rima, especially those in Kebbi State, to make good use of farm inputs and implements such as fertilisers and CNG and solar-powered pumps provided by Governor Idris to boost food sufficiency.
The Shatiman Gwandu then appealed to politicians to play politics devoid of bitterness or rancour, noting that the electorate would be encouraged to behave in an orderly manner during the electioneering and voting exercises.
