Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State
By El-Yakub Dabai, Birnin Kebbi
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi approved the payment of N75 000 as the new minimum wage for the state civil servants as well as for local government staff.
The Governor gave the approval when he signed into law the implementation document at the Government House Council Chamber with the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by its President, Joe Ajiero, in attendance.
Governor Idris directed the Ministry of Finance to as a matter of urgency ensure the implementation of the order within 72 hours by ensuring that October salaries reflected the increments to justify the promises he made to the workers during the national minimum wage increment saga.
He, however, thanked the leadership of the Organized Labour for supporting him through thick and thin from the start of his electioneering campaigns to his victory through the successes of his litigations, saying such support encouraged him to lead by example by proving the potentials of unionists in governance.
In his remarks, the NLC National President, Comrade Joe Ajero, said Governor Idris had vindicated the Labour Union by performing exceptionally well in all aspects of the economy in spite of the scarce resources compared to oil producing states who recorded little or no achievements despite the huge resources in their treasuries.
He observed that the Governor was able to give the state capital a befitting upgrade, constructed classrooms, hospitals, bridges, hospitals besides providing free fertilizers, solar and CNG powered irrigation pumps without compromising workers welfare.
Ajero commended the Governor for running a debt-free administration especially by being consistent in the payments of salaries, gratuities, pensions, death benefits and leave grants, noting that the gesture would boost the value of unionists in Nigerian politics.
