Nutritionist urges public to adopt good eating habits for better health

A registered nutritionist, Rabiatu Yusuf Jibril, has emphasized the importance of proper nutrition in maintaining good health and preventing non-communicable diseases.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Apex News Exclusive in Bauchi, she highlighted the critical roles that balanced diets play in ensuring the proper functioning of the human body.

“Nutrition is the foundation of all bodily functions. Without adequate nutrition, the body cannot function properly,” Jibril explained.

She noted that essential nutrients required for healthy living are derived from the food we consume, and these nutrients fuel all human activities, including movement, speech, reproduction, and brain function.

She warned that lack of good nutrition could lead to serious health consequences, including the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

“Many of the public health concerns we face today are rooted in poor nutrition,” she said, urging people to pay closer attention to what they eat.

Jibril advised the public to consume balanced diets that include carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, vitamins, and minerals, all of which can be found in everyday, affordable foods.

“You don’t need to go for expensive food items to get the nutrients your body needs,” she noted.

Using protein as an example, she explained that many people wrongly believe they must consume expensive sources like meat, fish, or milk to get enough protein.

“You can easily get your protein from plant sources such as soybeans or local alternatives like crayfish, which can be pounded and added to soups. Fish is also a cheaper option compared to meat,” she said.

Jibril also emphasized the importance of proper food preparation to retain nutrients. “When preparing vegetables, for instance, avoid overcooking. Quick steaming for two to three minutes is enough to preserve the nutrients,” she advised.

The nutritionist encouraged the public to be mindful of their dietary choices and to always strive for balanced meals.

“A healthy diet is the key to preventing many of the health problems we face today,” she added.

She wished everyone a “Happy World Food Day” as a reminder to prioritize nutrition for a healthier life.
