The Kebbi State Government has dismissed a purported report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) which classified the state as one of the poorest in the country.

The State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, made the dismissal on Sunday during a press conference held at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.

According to the commissioner, the UNDP report was an old report covering the period from 2018, during the first three years of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which the former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, revised and made public in order to tarnish the image of the Governor Idris-led administration.

He called on opposition candidates to concentrate on what would bring development to Kebbi, and not on condemnation or tarnishing the image of someone who was doing his best for his state.

Birnin Kebbi further appealed to the people of Kebbi State not to be carried away by overzealous candidates looking for cheap votes in the forthcoming general elections, noting that Governor Idris had performed creditably well in the areas of security, agriculture, entrepreneurship and infrastructure.

The commissioner stressed that the state chief executive had moved Kebbi State to greater heights within his three years in office, which in due course rescued a very bad situation of economic dislocation and widespread poverty accentuated by Malami and his cohorts.
