The Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, Emmanuel Offiong Bassey has decried a situation where primary school pupils sit on bare floors to learn.
On Monday when he donated 500 desks to seven primary schools in the local council, he argued that irrespective of what happened at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), it was not enough to deny the children seats and tables.
Bassey said what he did was not directly the council’s responsibility but an intervention and his redemption of promised he made when he campaigned for the office.
The council chairman said, “Whatever happens in SUBEB is not enough to allow the children to sit on bare floors to take lessons.
“It is pitiable the state of schools in his council. It is pathetic that our children go through such humiliating experiences to learn.
“I appeal to SUBEB and NDDC to come to the aid of these children and equally intervene because the situation is pitiable.”
Bassey said his donation is he first batch and that during the he second batch, more schools will benefit.
“We will capture another sets of schools in the nearest possible time until a reasonable number of primary schools in the Area are provided with desks for children.”
Bassey added that the donation will help to raise standard of education in the local Government.
The leader of Akpabuyo Legislative council, Honourable Elijah commended the efforts of the council chairman, disclosing that it was the enforcement of their resolution which called on the chairman to provide desks for primary Schools In the area.
