Peter Obi unveils economic agenda, promises production-led growth

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has unveiled an economic agenda centred on production, investment, enterprise and human capital development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this while addressing journalists at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State, as he formally commenced his campaign activities for the 2027 elections.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration, if elected, would prioritise increased agricultural productivity through improved security for farming communities, expanded irrigation facilities, better rural roads and storage infrastructure, as well as stronger access to finance and markets for farmers.
He also promised to create a business-friendly environment by removing unnecessary regulatory and infrastructural barriers that hinder entrepreneurs and businesses from investing, creating jobs and expanding their operations.
Obi stressed the need for prudent management of public resources, insisting that every naira spent by government should have a clear purpose, while major public investments should produce measurable results.
According to him, Nigeria needs leadership that listens to citizens, addresses their concerns and provides practical solutions to insecurity, poverty, hunger, poor education and inadequate healthcare.
On security, Obi called for improved intelligence gathering, better coordination among security agencies, strengthened community policing, effective border management and the deployment of modern technology to combat crime.
He described Nigeria’s youthful population as one of the country’s greatest assets, promising to strengthen basic education, improve universities and expand technical and vocational training to equip young Nigerians with skills needed in various sectors of the economy.
Obi said the ultimate objective of his economic plan was not simply to achieve economic growth, but to build a productive economy capable of creating jobs, generating wealth and improving the living standards of Nigerians, particularly vulnerable citizens.
On regional development, the former governor said he and his running mate, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, would seek to maximise the economic potential of each geopolitical zone.
He identified agriculture and agro-processing as key areas for the North-West and North-Central, reconstruction for the North-East, manufacturing and technology for the South-West, entrepreneurship for the South-East, and oil, gas and maritime development for the South-South.
He added that the Federal Capital Territory would be developed as a model of efficient urban planning and administration.
