The Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, has died.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria through a statement posted on its official Facebook page.
In the statement, the Secretariat invited Catholics and people of goodwill to join in praying for the peaceful repose of the late archbishop’s soul.
It expressed faith in the promise of the Resurrection and prayed that God would grant him eternal rest.
The Secretariat also asked that Archbishop Akubeze’s soul, along with those of all the faithful departed, rest in peace through God’s mercy.
No information was provided regarding the cause of his death or details about his funeral arrangements.
A native of Ogbakuba in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Archbishop Akubeze passed away on 9th of July, 2026 at the age of 69.
