The Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives (PIDAN), Central Zone, has called for the immediate implementation of the Federal Government’s proposed 1,000 Forest Guards initiative, describing it as a critical step towards addressing insecurity and safeguarding rural communities across Plateau State.

The appeal was made by the Chairman of PIDAN Central Zone, Mr. Alpha John Dakwak, during advocacy visits to Pankshin and Bokkos Local Government Areas, where the group met with traditional rulers and local government authorities.

Dakwak said the proposed initiative, if implemented without delay, would enhance efforts to tackle insecurity, particularly in rural communities that have continued to face attacks

He also urged the speedy passage of the State Police Bill, arguing that community-based security structures would complement existing security agencies and improve intelligence gathering and rapid response to security threats.

“The immediate implementation of the Federal Government’s proposed 1,000 Forest Guards initiative, alongside the establishment of state police, will go a long way in strengthening the protection of lives, farmlands and communities,” he said.

During the visit to Bokkos, the PIDAN delegation condoled with families and communities affected by recent attacks that claimed innocent lives, assuring them of the organisation’s continued support and commitment to advocating lasting peace in Plateau State.

The delegation also visited the Ngolong Ngas, His Royal Majesty Nde Jika Golit, Paramount Ruler of the Ngas Nation, the District Head of Bokkos, Saf Ron Monday Adanchin, and officials of the two local government councils.

Speaking during the engagements, Dakwak stressed that unity among the indigenous people of Plateau remained essential for sustainable peace and development. He commended the traditional institutions for promoting peaceful coexistence and resolving communal disputes through dialogue.

Responding, the traditional rulers praised PIDAN for its proactive engagement, describing the organisation as a credible platform for protecting the collective interests of Plateau’s indigenous communities.

They pledged continued collaboration with PIDAN in promoting unity, strengthening security and advancing peaceful coexistence across the state.

The advocacy visits, according to PIDAN, are part of its ongoing efforts to deepen engagement with traditional institutions, government authorities and communities in pursuit of a more peaceful, secure and prosperous Plateau State.
